PROFILING

ALL SKATE BLADES NEED A SKATE BLADE PROFILE
Most of the skate blades come with a rough profile out of the box but it's not recommended to use these rough profiles. If you want to make sure your abilities are fully transferred onto the ice, you need to update your skate blade profile.
An ice hockey player is presented with a number of standard profile templates depending on what profiling machine the team is using. Many teams use a Bauer ProSharp profiling machine and these players can select a Bauer ProSharp template. Some players find a favorite profile and continue with that profile for their entire career, while many others are forced to select "the least bad" profile.
These players will feel that they have more skating skills than they actually can show on the ice!

ice contact IN A STRIDE

DEPENDING ON WHAT THE PLAYER DOES ON THE ICE, DIFFERENT SECTIONS OF THE BLADE IS IN CONTACT WITH THE ICE

ICE CONTACT

A common misperception is that most of the skate blade is in direct contact with the ice at all times. In fact, 40 to 80mm (1.5 to 3 inches) are in contact with the ice depending on how curved (profile) the skate blade is. In a stride, the area in contact with the ice moves along the skate blade.

ACCELERATION

When accelerating the player is using the center and the front part of the blade. At the end of the stride the player usually makes a toe-kick as a last push. Optimizing the skate blade for good acceleration requires adjustments at the center-front and front of the blade.

POWER STRIDES

The most powerful stride has its main force pushed at the center of the blade and somewhat towards the heel. Optimizing the blade for power requires adjustments to the center of the blade. The stride eventually ends up at the front of the blade so the transition area center-front is of importance.

MANEUVERING

When turning the rear and the center part of the blade are of importance. Skating backwards, the center-front and front part of the blade controls the turn.

PLAYERS TESTIMONIALS
"At the end of my stride, I lose all power and my toe kick is a punch in the air"
"It's very hard to accelerate but once at max speed all feels ok"
"At cross-overs or when using maximum power strides, it takes a lot of effort bringing the skate back"
"Sometimes it feels like the skate blade gets stuck in the ice even though the ice is hard and not soft"
"As soon as I start accelerating, I end up on my toes with total lack of power"
"It's difficult to maneuver. I put a lot of pressure on the skate to make it turn but eventually the grip fails and I crash onto the ice"
"I am a powerful skater but I seldom get the correct angles on my knees and ankles to transform all my power onto the ice"
